3. Repulse the Monkey
While in Yang, Chen and Wu styles this posture is performed stepping backward and facing in one direction, in Sun style we turn 180 degrees. A better name for it is “Step back and chase the monkey” as seen in this video of Sun Lutang’s daughter and student, Master Sun Jianyun, from 1959.
In application, this turn more or less does away with the notion of repulsing entirely and instead lets the opponent’s momentum carry them through the technique. More like “Step around the monkey and fling it in the direction it is already moving.”
