1. Wuji

This is the body in its empty or unconsidered state before beginning practice. Common translations include “ultimate nothingness,” “pre-formed,” and the “absences of extremes.” I like “undifferentiated chaos” and its relationship to wonton soup.

2. Taiji

Before any movement, Wuji becomes Taiji through the conscious differentiation between Yin and Yang. This awareness can be felt in any part of the body as any comprehensible duality (open / closed, hot / cold, long / short, etc) but we want to focus on the differentiation between up and down. Lately I feel it in a sort of three-tiered fractal consisting of the top and bottom halves of my body; the upper leg and lower leg; and the upper and lower parts of the calf.

3. Lazily tie back the coat

“Lazily throw the jacket over your shoulder like Frank Sinatra” is probably a more accurate description of this movement, especially when contrasted with the big intertwining circles of Chen Style, which give the impression of tying a belt or sash around your waist or pushing the two parts of a big robe behind you.

In any case, this movement contains the distillation of three fundamental principles that will resurface throughout the rest of the form. The first is the transfer of weight from one foot to the other without moving the zhong ding as seen in 3.4. The second is the drawing in of the right foot to sink and continue extending the right hand during 3.6, and the third is the temporal coordination of differently paced movements (i.e. movements with different speeds and/or durations) so that they land simultaneously that happens during 3.7.
